NMR is seeking candidates for a Research Associate II position. We’re an employee-owned consulting firm specializing in the research and evaluation of energy-efficiency and clean-energy programs. Energy efficiency and clean energy are burgeoning fields that provide excellent career opportunities.

The anticipated salary for this position is in the $60,000s, depending on qualifications and experience. We also offer a strong array of benefits, including: Employee Stock Ownership Plan; health, dental, and disability insurance; 401K; three weeks of paid vacation in the first year of employment (up to six weeks after multiple years of employment); paid parental leave; and reimbursement for continuing education, home internet, and fitness expenses.

We offer a flexible working arrangement. This position is expected to work up to several days each week in our Somerville, MA office, with the remaining days working from home. The ideal candidate will already live in the Boston area, though we may supplement moving expenses if needed. The start date may accommodate highly qualified and capable individuals with an expected graduation date as late as May 2025.

We seek to hire individuals possessing the knowledge, skills, and abilities typically gained through master’s level education or prior work in environmental science, policy, economics, sociology, or other social science programs. We are looking for applicants who think critically and creatively, take initiative, and are not afraid to ask questions. The ideal candidate will contribute to our culture of teamwork and employee ownership by sharing knowledge freely, offering their unique perspective, and giving and receiving constructive feedback. We value colleagues who are committed to sustainability and dedicated to high quality research.

Primary responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Designing, implementing, and analyzing survey data
  • Conducting semi-structured interviews
  • Performing descriptive quantitative analyses using R, SPSS, or similar data analysis packages
  • Conducting onsite audits of the energy performance of homes and businesses
  • Developing energy analyses and energy models
  • Writing clear and concise research summaries, memoranda, and reports

This position requires the employee to become certified as a Home Energy Rating System rater (training paid by NMR) to perform onsite energy audits of homes. Most of the time (90%+) this position is office-based; however, the onsite audits may require employees to travel up to 25% of the time for several consecutive months, sometimes requiring overnight stays. At times, these onsite audits can be physically and mentally taxing. Employee and customer safety are always our top priority; employees are empowered to determine when a situation is not safe to conduct audits.

NMR’s core values are environmental stewardship, producing the highest quality work possible, and care for colleagues’ professional and personal wellbeing and equity. Accordingly, we seek to minimize our greenhouse gas emissions, and purchase offsets for the carbon output resulting from our business operations. We emphasize delivering high-quality research to our clients and strive for a 40-hour work week.

As part of our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, we wish to emphasize our dedication to creating a diverse workforce. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds no matter their race, creed, gender, age, sexual orientation, neurodiversity, or socioeconomic status.
