Our Carbon Footprint

Carbon Footprint

Efficiency and “green” is more than simply a business for NMR; it also represents a personal commitment to our communities and our planet. At the same time as we are helping our clients ensure the effectiveness of their energy efficiency and renewable energy programs, we also are concerned about the environmental impacts of our own business operations. The majority of NMR staff members are full-time telecommuters, thereby reducing carbon emissions associated with daily commuting and the additional energy consumption associated with heating, cooling, and lighting office buildings. Each year, NMR employees participate in a corporate-wide carbon footprint assessment that measures our own contribution to carbon dioxide emissions. The results of this assessment are used as the basis for purchasing carbon offsets.

2009 Carbon Assessment

In 2009, NMR’s carbon footprint—other than business-related travel—was just 17% of a similarly-sized company located in a LEED Gold Certified Building in which everyone commutes in hybrid cars or walks, bikes, or uses public transportation and was 6% of that of an average office-based business of similar size.

NMR’s business activities (including travel) in 2009 resulted in 63,589 pounds or 28.85 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. Accordingly, NMR purchased offsets for 100% of that amount from New England Wind, a program of the Massachusetts Energy Consumers Alliance funding wind energy project development in New England.
